Pseudopelade - a rare condition of hair loss in women

Pseudopelade, an unusual form of permanent hair loss on the scalp, is a condition that most commonly affects middle-aged women. It is alopecia with scars characterized by discrete asymptomatic areas of hair loss on the head. The cause of this condition is unknown, and recent studies have shown that pseudopelades progress slowly, and in some cases may worsen during periods of inactivity.

Although this rare, insidious alopecia most commonly affects women between the ages of 40 and 50, it can affect both sexes and all age groups, including children. Pseudopelade is not an inflammatory form of alopecia and hair loss occurs as a result of atrophy of hair follicles, not scars. Pseudopelade creates scars and manifests itself in discrete asymptomatic areas of permanent hair loss. This disease progresses slowly in some patients, while in others it may worsen during periods of activity followed by periods of inactivity.

Pseudopelades lead to round, oval or irregular shapes, often widespread and grouped bald spots on the scalp. There are not many studies that support the causes of pseudopelad. Medical experts claim that it could be either an autoimmune disorder or a purely genetic result. The sex ratio for people suffering from this rare condition is three women for every man, which is why it is known that this disease is more common in women.

Doctors recommend a skin biopsy to achieve a positive diagnosis. In its early stages, pseudopelad can show physical symptoms in the form of irregularly shaped spots, inflammation of the scalp, reduction of hair follicles, loss of sebaceous glands and general hair loss.

The older a person gets, the more hair falls out for several years, before the condition permanently ceases. As the hair follicles in the affected area stop regenerating, the skin stays shiny and returns to its normal color when the condition stops.

As the only permanent solution to this problem, experts recommend hair transplantation.
